Week 2 Discussion Question

We begin to learn a little about Kek's life and his family. Kek has strong feelings about his brother Lual in the chapter called "Brother." He tells us that sometimes Lual scolded him, like his father, and teased him, but that he "would give all the beds in all the great world to feel the sharp thorn of Lual's scolding once again." If his brother was so mean to him why does he miss him so much? What can you infer happened to his brother? How do you think this changes Kek?

  1. I think Kek misses his brother because maybe the scolding was the teasing kind of scolding. On page 38, it says
“He would have known a soft bed
    was made for jumping.
He would have growled at me
    for misbehaving,
    but then,
    when no one was looking,
he would have jumped just as high.”
I think Lual was just acting grown up because he wanted to seem like a man, but he also wants to have fun, so behind people’s backs, he does what boys do. He’s kind of like a hypocrite. Kek probably knew that, so he wants to be able to play with his brother again. I think maybe Lual went to fight in the war, but he got killed by the other side’s soldiers. I think that happened to Kek’s father, too. Without his family, Kek is lonely. I think that we take our family for granted most of the time, and don’t imagine that we could be in Kek’s situation. He probably did that too, and wishes he hadn’t. Now he is alone in a different country with a different language, everything’s different - but the cow.

  2. Even though his brother was so mean and always scolded he loves his brother because he only has one Laul and I bet they have had some fun times together. He probably doesn’t realize how much he loves him until he is not there. I infer that Kek’s brother Lual was killed or died. That changes Kek because he is his family and when someone in you're family dies you’re not happy. That is just natural.

    1. When you said "He probably doesn't realize how much he loves him until he is not there," I agree. I think we should take the things that we have for granted less often. You had great thinking.

  3. Kek misses his brother so much because even though his brother was mean to him he obviously has some good memories of his brother and him . A brother is a brother and you can’t change that no matter what, even if you don’t like it then your life might really suck. And maybe Kek looked up to his brother and it is really hard when someone you love disappears and you never see them again. I think that Kek’s brother died in a storm because it said:”The night Ganwar lost his hand was the night I lost my father and my brother.” I think this changes Kek because he is going to have to grow up without a family and he will have to learn how to take care of himself.

    1. I agree that you are right on how Kek changes, and that is great thinking, but I don't see how ”The night Ganwar lost his hand was the night I lost my father and my brother” has to do with a storm. I don't see how you got that, James. Help me!

  4. I think that Kek misses his brother Lual so much because he is family and if you had moved away from your sibling you would still be sad even know you didn’t like them as much as other family.I can infer that Kek’s brother Lual is not living with Kek and his father, or died because It says that “I would give all the beds in all the great world to feel the sharp thorn of Lual’s scolding once again. It says once again and that means that he hasn't heard from his brother in a while so maybe he had died recently or left the house. I think that Kek changes because he feels more strongly about his brother then he had ever before because he had never been away from his brother like this before.

  5. I think still loves Lual even no he was mean because if you’re in a family you will always love you siblings even if they have been really mean you will always love them because they have done a lot for you that is why Kek still loves Lual. One other thing is that if your brother or sister goes to college you will miss them a lot because they have always been around for you and you don’t have anyone to talk to and this is just like Kek and Lual because Kek doesn’t have anybody to share his feelings because Lual is gone.
I can infer that Lual went on an adventure and got lost and couldn’t know how to get back and then he passed away because it says in the book “Lual knew well knew how to make his brother laugh.” That could have happened because sometimes when you go on and you don’t know the way out you starved and die because you don’t have food. I think this changes Kek because now without a brother that is mean to you can live a life without anyone being mean. I also think this changes Kek is because he can do things without two people telling him what to do one example from the book is it says Lual, please just be my brother. I don’t need two fathers! Have you lost your ears, my stubborn brother. That shows that Lual was the mean dad and it could mean that Ganwar was the nice dad.

  6. I think Kek still loves his brother because they still had nice moments. I think that his brother died by the men with guns. It probably changes Keks life by him not getting teased anymore. I think Kek is sad and upset about what happened to his brother.

  7. I think that Kek misses his brother because he is his only brother and he is family. I think that his brother is either dead or back in Africa getting help and same with his father. I think this changes Kek because now he is more confident about his mother, father, and his brother.

  8. Kek misses his brother because he is family to him. I infer that Lual died when the men with guns and knives came. Kek changes because he is so used to Lual being with him and he always talks about him.

  9. I Think Kek misses his brother Lual so much because he has not seen or talked to him since he has goten to America and Kek came to America alone not with his family. I can infer that Lual was killed durring the fighting.I think it changes him because he has to live in America without his brother. I believe that Kek is still adapting to living in America. I think that Kek is excited when he goes to school because he gets his own desk and he can eat a lot at lunch. I think Kek is excited when he gets a job working with a cow because he probably misses his home and his family and the cow reminds him of his family and home. I think it was kind of funny when Kek tried to wash the dishes in the washing machine. I am exited to find out what will happen next to Kek.
